It can be difficult to motivate yourself to get out of the winter movie-marathon mindset and get the feather duster out ready for a big spring clean!
The changing of the season is the perfect time to freshen up your home, but how do you make the most of your spring clean? We’ve pulled together some helpful ideas to get that spring in your step whilst walking round with the hoover.
Time yourself
One of the biggest obstacles getting in the way of a good spring clean is time. Nobody wants to spend days on end cleaning, but it can be very easy to lose track of time once you start. Try setting yourself a time limit for each room so that they all get equal attention and you know just how long it’s going to take you. You can even make it a challenge to reduce your time as you move around each room – if you’re feeling competitive.
Be realistic
We’re all guilty of hoarding, and it can be quite difficult to part with belongings which hold sentimental value, however you need to be realistic about the use of the things in your home. There’s no point building a collection of belongings which just sit in a cupboard or on a shelf collecting dust. If you haven’t used something in several months, chances are it won’t get used again. It may be much more valuable to someone else, so try selling it or donating it to your local charity shop.
Rearrange the furniture
Since you’re already going to move your furniture when deep-cleaning your house, take this opportunity to get creative and rearrange your furniture. This is a cheap way to freshen your home and make the most of the space in your room which may not be being utilised.
Don’t forget the exterior
Although the majority of the cleaning will be on the inside of your home, the outside of your home is often the best place to start. It won’t take long to wipe away the cobwebs and clean the front door, but it can make a huge difference to the appearance of your house. Remember to wipe down any outdoor furniture too, as this is likely to have become dirty from snow and rain during the winter.
Plan ahead for the new season
Once you’ve finished the majority of your cleaning, it’s good practice to rearrange your belongings so that you have the new season essentials more easily to hand. Bring your lighter clothes to the front of your wardrobe and put your woolly hat and scarf at the back. You can also rearrange your cupboards and garage so that your sledge is put away for the season and the picnic basket is ready for its first appearance of the year!
