Jordan Smith joined Mortgage Advice Bureau in February 2020, after previously being employed by a popular high street bank.

We asked Jordan to share his experience with us about joining our network, becoming self-employed and advice for others who may be thinking of making a similar change.

Why did you choose to join Mortgage Advice Bureau?

I wanted the flexibility of being my own boss. After working for a bank for ten years, the thought of running my own business was the attraction for me.

In my previous job I had quite a long reporting line of managers, so there was an element of having to tell people my exact movements every single day, whereas now I control my own diary and look after myself.

What do you like about being self- employed?

I now answer to myself. I control when I work and when I want to take holidays etc. The responsibility I have has massively increased but the rewards I’m seeing for it are fantastic.

My family life has got better, I’m at home more. My earning potential has increased. But I didn’t leave my employed role to earn more money, I left to increase my work/life balance, or as I now look at it my ‘life balance’.

What would you say to someone who was thinking of joining Mortgage Advice Bureau as a self-employed mortgage adviser?

If somebody was in the position that I was in before, an employed mortgage adviser working in a corporate environment and considering making the jump to go self-employed, I would massively advocate it.

If I was to rate my experience with Mortgage Advice Bureau, I’d give it a ten out of ten.
