As we enter spring and summer, with the warm weather and longer nights, it’s finally time for a yearly spring clean! Spring cleaning can seem a little overwhelming but breaking down what can be done step-by-step can make it much easier and enjoyable. So, gather your cleaning products and garden tools and let’s get started!
Clear and switch out your wardrobe
Spring is the time to change your wardrobe, from warm winter clothes to your spring/summer items. Whilst doing this, you might find clothes you no longer want or wear, so why not donate them to charity shops or sell them online?
Clean your fridge and cupboards
Spend some time cleaning out your fridge and cupboards, removing unwanted and out-of-date food. You could take unwanted tinned/long shelf-life products to a food donation service, and out-of-date fresh produce that’s no longer edible can go in a composting bin which is great for soil and your plants.
Don’t miss all those nooks and crannies
A spring clean is the time to clean all the forgotten, tricky and hidden areas of your home. Making a list of what needs to be cleaned for each room can make the task simpler. For example, the bedroom list can include rotating or flipping the mattress, organising drawers, and washing pillows. For the bathroom you could organise cabinets and draws, throw out expired products, wash the shower curtain and bathmat.
Create the perfect spring feeling
Your spring clean can bring feelings of calm and contentment. After a big declutter, you can enjoy a deeply cleaned home and a garden full of blooming flowers. Opening your windows and having fresh flowers can be the simplest way to welcome spring into your home. Another way of creating the spring feeling is making small changes to colours and décor in your home. For example, swapping darker bedding, curtains, and cushions for lighter brighter colours.
Prepare your garden for the warm weather
1. Prep soil for new plants
You can prepare your soil by removing any dead plants and weeds, including the roots and shoots. Adding organic matter such as compost to your soil can add nutrients and help grow big, luscious plants and flowers.
2. Plant bulbs/plants and flowers
Summer blooming plants and flowers should typically be planted during springtime, since there’s much less chance of frost. Also choosing big, high-quality bulbs that are plump and firm can grow into larger plants compared to smaller, lower quality bulbs.
3. Create a nectar café
Creating a nectar café for bees, butterflies, moths, and hoverflies can provide them with pollen and nectar to survive and thrive as they move from flower to flower. You can do this by planting flowers that attract these insects.
Plan those renovations!
The change in seasons can bring a change of style, whether it’s something smaller, like home décor or something bigger, such as a change in paint colour or wanting a new kitchen or bathroom.
Planning these things in advance can help you prepare a budget for the renovations you’re wanting. If you want a larger renovation or addition to your home, such as an extension, it might be worth speaking to a mortgage adviser about remortgaging to finance your renovations.
