Yvette Story joined Mortgage Advice Bureau on 1 February 2021. She’s been in the financial services industry for more than 20 years, most recently as a Mortgage and Protection Adviser for a well-known high street bank.

We asked Yvette to share her experiences about becoming self-employed and working with Mortgage Advice Bureau

Why did you decide to make the move from an employed role to becoming self-employed?

I’ve always wanted to try becoming self-employed but needed the courage to make that leap. I had a couple of colleagues that had done it with Mortgage Advice Bureau the year before I did and said great things about their experiences, which is what gave me the final push to do it.  As part of the Mortgage Advice Bureau network I’m my own boss but I’ve got a LOT of support behind me from the organisation, which I really like. It gives me the best of both worlds.

What benefits have you found so far?

I now have both a better earning potential and home/life balance -  I can work a lot of hours if I want to and will be directly rewarded for this, or I can take some time out to enjoy with my family. There’s a lot of flexibility both ways, and that’s important to me.

At a recent team meeting I was also given the ‘Best Newcomer Award’ which I was thrilled about, as it cemented that I’m doing a good job and that moving to become self-employed was the right choice.

What do you enjoy about working with Mortgage Advice Bureau?

The nicest part of all is the team I’m a part of – it’s a lovely atmosphere, very supportive and friendly, much more down to earth than a traditional corporate atmosphere.

What kind of person do you think would benefit from working under the Mortgage Advice Bureau proposition as a self-employed Mortgage Adviser?

If you’re a driven individual who’s not afraid of hard work and would appreciate a more flexible approach to working hours. If you’re passionate about helping people and are already putting in the effort, why not doing it for yourself?
