GDPR stands for The General Data Protection Regulation and is the new European Union standard for data protection. It will replace The Data Protection Act 1998 (DPA).

GDPR is coming into effect from 25th May 2018 and will be adopted by the UK as this came into effect before the conclusion of the UK’s exit from the EU. This means that data protection law will be almost identical across the whole EU.

What does this mean?

It means that you now have greater control over how organisations will use your data. You will be able to access the personal information organisations hold about you and request for them to change it if necessary.

Organisations now need to think more carefully about how they use their customers data. Any organisation that doesn’t comply with the new rules will suffer a data breach and could end up paying a hefty penalty.
